What Claude for teachers, an alleged A.I. cheating case, and Roblox’s game builder mean for educators

A.I. is showing up in classrooms for teachers and students faster than guidance can keep up, and the schools that come out ahead won’t have the strictest filters, they’ll have the most A.I. Literacy education for both.

A.I. tools are flooding classrooms. The question is whether educators are ready to use them well.

Anthropic’s Claude for Teachers and a new California law landed the same week, and how schools respond right now matters for the long run.

The Gist

Anthropic just launched Claude for Teachers, an A.I. assistant for verified K-12 educators that can build personalized lesson plans, align instruction to state standards, and analyze student data. It joins Google, OpenAI, and Khan Academy in a growing race to embed A.I. directly into schools. At the same time, California just became one of the first states to draw a legal line in the sand: A.I. cannot replace human educators. Together, these two headlines highlight how A.I. in education is no longer a hypothetical. How schools respond right now matters for the long run.

What to Know

Claude for Teachers is free for verified U.S. educators and will be piloted in Detroit Public Schools starting next school year. It is designed to pull together a student’s past assessment data and existing lesson materials to generate customized instruction.

Teachers are already reaching for tools like this. Around 61% of teachers reported using A.I. in some capacity in 2025, nearly double the 32% who said the same in 2024. Many use it to build lesson plans, though some say the plans it generates can sometimes miss the mark.

Access to tools and preparation to use them well are two very different things. A 2026 study by the Walton Family Foundation and Gallup found that only 18% of public K-12 teachers have received formal guidance from administrators on how to use A.I. tools. Nearly half reported receiving only informal guidance, and a third said they had received none at all.

California’s response looked a bit different. Governor Newsom signed Assembly Bill 2148 into law on June 30, amending the state education code to require that all school staff and contractors in public schools be “natural people.” The change ensures A.I. cannot legally replace human educators, and it takes effect January 1, 2027. Assemblymember Al Muratsuchi was direct about the intent: technology should serve educators, not replace or penalize them.

The human relationship between educator and student is irreplaceable, and the schools that focus on equipping their educators and students to navigate A.I. in intentional ways are the ones that will thrive in the A.I. era. Students are navigating A.I. decisions every day without clear guidance for what responsible use looks like. Schools that respond only with stricter detection and restrictions are missing the bigger opportunity: helping students build the skills and character to make good choices even when no one is watching. Educators can help by:

  • Build intentional A.I. professional development into school culture. Educators deserve ongoing support so they can use new technology in ways that serve students.
  • Keep the human relationship at the center. California’s new law reinforces what research has always supported: the educator-student relationship is what drives learning, and A.I. can support that relationship rather than replicate it.
  • Start with educator voice. The teachers who will use A.I. most effectively are the ones who feel trusted to make professional judgments about it. Involve them in building your school’s approach from the start.

A Brown professor believes the majority of his class used A.I. to cheat: How to help students understand what integrity means in an A.I. world.

A 96% take-home average, a 48.6% in-person final, and a lesson about why teaching integrity beats chasing detection.

The Gist

Brown University economics professor Roberto Serrano gave his class a take-home midterm this spring for the first time in nearly two decades of teaching. He did so because he wanted to support students who had expressed anxiety about being in a classroom following a traumatic event that happened on campus earlier in the year. What followed was something he had never seen before.

The class average was 96% on an exam he had intentionally made harder than usual, given that students had unlimited time at home. When he ran the answers through ChatGPT, the responses mirrored what his students had written closely enough to confirm what he already suspected: the majority of his 86 students had used A.I. to do it. He switched the final to in-person, and 18 students dropped the course completely instead of taking it in the classroom. The average on the final dropped to 48.6%, a historic low for the class. Only a small handful of students scored similarly to how they had on the midterm.

What to Know

Serrano’s experience is striking, but it points to a challenge playing out across education at every level. Three-quarters of Brown faculty reported concern about students using A.I. to cheat, matching a 2025 nationwide survey of faculty across the country. A university committee reviewing the situation recommended that institutions “de-emphasize punishment” and focus instead on helping students understand what integrity means in an A.I. world. Catching A.I. use after the fact is difficult, and rules alone don’t build the judgment students actually need. The more urgent question is what’s being taught before students ever open a take-home exam or turn to A.I. for classwork help.

This story is about what happens when schools focus only on detecting A.I. use instead of teaching students how to use it responsibly. Students need more than rules about when A.I. is allowed. They need opportunities to practice making thoughtful decisions about when A.I. helps their learning and when it gets in the way, and why independent thinking still matters.

  • Detection isn’t a strategy. Schools that focus primarily on catching A.I. use miss the opportunity to build something more durable: students who make thoughtful choices even when no one is watching.
  • Students need practice making decisions about A.I., not just rules about it. Give students real opportunities to think through when A.I. supports their learning and when it gets in the way.
  • Assessments may need to evolve alongside technology. In-person conversations and tasks tied to students’ specific contexts are all harder to shortcut, and often more meaningful anyway.

Roblox’s new A.I. game builder puts creative power in students’ hands, but raises real questions about the value of human creativity

Build lets anyone make a game from a single text prompt, raising fresh questions about originality and ownership.

The Gist

Roblox just launched “Build,” a new feature that lets anyone create a basic game directly from their phone using a single text prompt, no coding experience required. Type something like “a cozy adventure game set in a dense forest” and the feature generates a playable game, handling the gameplay mechanics, characters, visual style, and sound. Users can then modify and share what they build. Starting July 28th, the feature enters public alpha testing for users in New Zealand aged nine and up who have verified their age. Users who are 16 and up able to publish their creations to a global audience. It will be free to use, with paid options available. Roblox joins Google, Microsoft, and Tencent in building similar tools. It will definitely not be the last platform to put this kind of creative power directly in students’ hands.

What to Know

Students are stepping into the creator’s seat, not only the audience’s, but a question to consider is when a text prompt does the actual work, how much of the creation truly belongs to the student?

The imaginative work of building something from scratch is where real creativity lives, in deciding what a world looks like, how characters move, and what a game feels like to play. Tools like Build can lower the barrier to entry and encourage students to learn the new skill of effective A.I. prompting. It can also shortcut the process that makes creating meaningful in the first place. 52% of game industry professionals say generative A.I. is already hurting the industry, and for younger creators, the stakes are just as real.

With a simple text prompt, students can now build and share games directly from their phones, dramatically lowering the barrier to becoming a creator. This shift opens exciting opportunities for entrepreneurship and creative skills, and it also raises important questions about originality, responsible creation, and what it means to put something out into the world. Educators can help students think it through by:

  • Empower students to be intentional creators, not just users. A.I. tools make it easy to produce content quickly. Help students slow down and ask: Does it reflect my values? Would I put my name on it?
