How McDougle Middle School Integrated Social-Emotional Learning To Empower Students and Faculty

McDougle Middle School is a highly rated public school located in Chapel Hill, NC. It has approximately 750 students in grades 6-8 who come from a diverse range of socio-economic backgrounds, with about 26 percent qualifying for free and reduced lunch assistance. This case study explores how McDougle Middle School enhanced SEL from a stand-alone class taught only by counselors, to embedding SEL into all classes taught by all faculty.

McDougle’s Challenges

  • How do we build meaningful relationships between students and faculty?
  • How do we effectively educate students on social media and technology education as we transition to 1:1?
  • How do we build staff’s capacity and comfort level leading SEL discussions?
  • How do we equip faculty and parents, who did not grow up with tech, with the skills they need to effectively talk to students about this ever-changing topic?
